Nursing is the largest profession in the medical and health care field. It offers plenty of diversification and lots of opportunities. Throughout your training you will get a taste of the different types of nursing areas that are available to you. From there you can choose which one you would like to specialize in. One of the most challenging areas is a career as a mental health nurse.
If you decide that your niche of choice is mental health then you will be assigned as many responsibilities as you would if you chose any other branch of nursing. Let us look at what some of your job duties would be if you decided to pursue a career as a mental health nurse.
Mental health nurses are required to make assessments about the patients in their charge. The nurse must first gather as much pertinent information about the patient as possible in regards to his or her mental condition and any factors that may have an influence on it such as medications, lifestyle choices, background, life problems and family.
Nurses in this field must come up with a preliminary diagnosis that they can communicate to the doctor before the doctor sees the patient for him or herself. It is the doctor who will make the final diagnosis but any prior input and feedback from the nurse is very much appreciated and encouraged.
It is part of a nurse’s job to have the foresight to plan ahead for the patient’s healing and recuperation period. He or she must be able to come up with methods that can benefit the patient in getting better. The nurse is also responsible for helping the patient to see that they play an integral role in their own healing. He or she must be able to coax and support the patient in healing themselves.
A mental health nurse implements solutions for the patient. The solutions could include administering medications, implementing procedures or educating the patient. There might be moments when the nurse comforts and soothes his or her patient and offers as much encouragement as is necessary.
Evaluating results is another aspect of the mental health nurse’s job. He or she will take a close look at the cause and effect treatment strategy and from there will decide if the results are the hoped for ones or if changes need to be made. This may be an area where a team of nurses consults together or it might be an evaluation by only one nurse who has come to know the patient very well. Be aware that patience and a caring nature are essential to being a mental health nurse.
